This was depressing, bleak and hugely enlightening.
I’m from a print background, and watched the decline of the comics & magazine industry from the inside, somehow dodging the annual axe swing for a good few years until it finally got me too.
But I had no idea about the revenue generated by Guides for online journalism - and as someone who regularly uses Guides to complete anything - cos I’m rubbish as games - this was fascinating and retrospectively obvious.
The bleakness of the impact of GenAi data scraping from Google is very worrying, and I thank you for raising this in your typically erudite manner.
Another confirmation, not that I needed one, that this subscription is money well spent.
Great piece Nathan...I see in my crystal ball a future (not so distant) where everybody has a browser wallet and as they read ad-free website pages, tiny streaming payments are made to the author..the user pays for what they read as they read it...and Googles ad revenue driven UI hellscape will appear as quaint as Grandmas first NES
So in the spirit of encouraging direct reader to author payments do you have a way of accepting one off payments? Great article that I would happily pay for reading even if I’m not keen on long term subscription to newsletters in general.
Yes it’s 3,000, but cor what a captivating 3,000, eh? Love it, great words.
Well... I agree. That’s why I’m paying you.

Fantastic piece. Very well said Mr. Brown.
Now, how do we all get those sub numbers up for you?
Excellent read.
Great piece. Have a new sub... :)
